Prunilla

Bericht door hellspawn » 11-02-2011 21:22

•Aliases: Lady Comfort, Lady of the Harvest
•Race: Halfling
•Worshippers: Halfling (primarily female)
•Governs: Agriculture, Family, Food, Hearth and Home, Marriage
•Mantras: Humble, Passive, Rural, Sedentary

"Learn from what I teach, teach it to others, and make sure you have no leftovers."
Prunilla teaches her followers that a true life is led when tending to the soil under your feet and caring for those who surround you through it. Planting and harvesting are part of a simple cycle, and it is in the care of our people to spice that cycle with happiness and joy. Nurture the land as if it were your body, plant crops as if you were kissing your beloved, and tend them as if you were caring for your own soul. It is those things and those who you bring close to your heart that will bring fulfillment to your life. Family is the foundation of our society, the filling in our pie. If it is not properly blessed with pure love, it will begin to crumble. Thus, endure for those you love. By showing them the purity of your heart, they will survive the hardest of times.
"Life here is like a good pie. Ye got the rough outsides that are sometimes harsh to get through and not so easy on the teeth. But when properly baked, ye got a scrumptious, beefier taste. Then, ye got a cover that is soft and moldable. Ye can find anything on it really—all sorts of colors and shapes. What's most important is what's under. And that's where it all lies. In the heart. All sorts of flavors and tastes. Halflings are just that." – Daman Livenoak, Tribe Elder

Clergy Attire

Bericht door hellspawn » 11-02-2011 21:23

"Feed. Tend. Keep alive. If they get whacked, you're next in line."

Faithful of Prunilla are not seasoned warriors, their true skill and mettle lies within preserving others and instilling the front lines with the enduring grace of Lady Comfort. Yet there are times when even the farmer must pick up a weapon to defend what he believes in. Whenever a follower of Prunilla is faced with imminent combat, their weapon of choice is a modified farmer's sickle. This simple farming instrument, reinforced by simple forging techniques to withstand heavy blows, is normally spiced with electrical enchantments. Their objective is not truly to cleave through hordes of evildoers, but instead to annoy and distract until the stronger can deal with the threats.
When anticipating battle, they favor studded leathers in brown and green often decorated with clovers and with enough ease to move in the battlefield to supply healing aid to any that may need it. When no combat is expected, clerics of Prunilla are seen in more casual attire that often shares the earthy colors of their armor. Robes are common amongst her faithful, and if any halfling is ever to show humility through their garbs, it normally means that they are devoted to Lady Comfort.

Hierarchy

Bericht door hellspawn » 11-02-2011 21:23

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Because all fields are grown evenly, there is only a seed and a plant that grows."

The Church of Lady of the Harvest is not structured in complicated pyramidal schemes where one person reports to a higher authority by filling in complicated forms that only lead to more headaches than any halfling should ever bother with. No. Prunilla's faithful follow the halfling spirit to the core. Since it has been ingrained for many ages, they will always say, "Life is simple, don't be tall about it." This, of course, is simply their view about themselves, for in their simple view of life, many misunderstandings are reached that have been known to end in epic-sized stories of the small-sized creatures. In reality, there are only two layers to the Church of Lady of the Harvest, the first being a Sapling and the second that of a Lucky Clover.

Saplings
Saplings of Prunilla are those followers that have discovered or taken upon the path of clergy. These young halflings are known for their very caring demeanor, a desire to perpetuate the halfling culture, and a gift for tending to fields and the harvest. Saplings normally learn all the tools of the trade from Clan Mothers or Lucky Clovers and are often made to do all the menial work for these two in order to build that enduring character that most clerics of Prunilla have. Most Saplings are given playful nicknames that are adopted into their birth names. These nicknames often portray their personalities through fruits and labor of the harvest. Names like Cookie, Nutty, Cherry, or Spicy are normally heard flying around in the fields for Saplings to carry farming tools or collect batches of harvest baskets. Yet despite these hard years, Saplings often take this work with great joy, and behind every playful complaint of how they are being driven by slavers, there is a caring smile and warm dedication to clan and culture.
Eventually, Saplings ripe into full-fledged clerics, an event that is normally triggered either by their 30th birthday or the passing (or retirement) of their mentors. Whichever may come first, all Saplings embrace this growth in the way all halflings should-- by celebrating. Thus, in a long night of clan joys and merriment, the Sapling cooks their favorite meal and gives a little of it to everyone present. Called the Night of the Bloom, it marks the beginning of a new phase in those who choose the warm path of Prunilla.

Lucky Clovers
The second and only other layer of Lady Comfort's church is that of the Lucky Clovers. The name is said to have originated from Deliar's gift to Prunilla when he was courting her. As the story goes, the day Deliar proposed to Prunilla he was so nervous and jittery that in the moment he was presenting her with the ring, he stumbled and it dropped into a large clover patch. Not wanting to disappoint, he improvised a small ring from a wreath of the clovers and presented it as his band of union with her. Prunilla never bothered replacing the ring despite Deliar's constant showering of many presents, and it is said that the first priestess of Lady of the Harvest was poked on the nose with the ringed finger, granting her a gift for her devotion and a name for her people.

Regardless of where the name came, Lucky Clovers never disappoint their namesake. If it is said that most halflings have luck on their backs. Many would argue that the Clovers are luck themselves, for in their tender touch, they seem to break all rules and bring to the world children who were never supposed to be born or save people from the strangest of ailments. When asked, they simply shrug and reply with their playful smirks saying, "I was lucky."

Lucky Clovers are respected in any halfling community they may be passing through. Many of them can easily claim that they brought the residents into this world or fed them when they were children. This motherly embrace is rarely forgotten and often grants them a place to stay wherever they roam. Of course, a meal prepared by a Lucky Clover is not easy to pass up; thus, adding to the leverage. Older Lucky Clovers often take on an apprentice to share all the wisdom they have gained through their lives. In their last years, they will make sure that a Sapling is at their side so that their last breath is captured and returned to the clans. In general, however, Lucky Clovers act as healers for their clans, midwives for those bearing child, tenders of the fields that many feed from, and soul for the race that never seems to lose its mirthful spirit.

Chosen of Prunilla

"Wait! Worm number one is in the lead!" -- Meadow

Lucky Clovers are equal to one another, none claiming to lead a particular region or clan, and simply enjoy Lady Comfort's gifts. There is one halfling though that stands as the primordial root to the many Clovers around the world. A halfling that, by defying the odds placed against her, is so close with Prunilla that her gift is made vivid with her touch. Born in the vicinity of Port Hempstead into a family wellknown by the halfling culture for birthing strong and faithful followers of Prunilla, Meadow Vaeran was the often ignored middle child of Dolores and Ike Vaeran. While her eldest sister, Harmony, was taught all of the family business, and her youngest sister, Peace, was given the freedom to travel the world, Meadow simply tended to the fields that were under the care of her clan. Slowly learning the ways of the Lady of the Harvest, Meadow was to turn into a full-fledged Lucky Clover when her future husband taught her the wisdom of the hearth.

Meadow's somewhat uneventful life was soon to be shaken to the core when a devastating plague struck many halfling communities living in the Spirit Dunes. While many were at a loss as to what to do about the disease that spread through them, Meadow was driven by something far deeper in her soul. Spending countless days and nights researching possible cures, she stumbled upon her first of many unorthodox solutions to problems of health. From that moment in time, Meadow's reputation slowly began increasing. When a malady is found that has no explanation nor known cure, Meadow concocts ways to deal with them, and at times, uses the diseases to better the halfling life. Rumors began spreading that she was some sort of angelic halfling left by accident in this world by Prunilla. Other darker rumors say she created all the strange ailments that only she could find solutions for. Yet whenever someone meets her in person and sees this simple female halfling dressed in the simplest of robes with a playful smile that couldn't possibly be the source of any evil, they have no arguments against her nature.

The truth is, while many know her as the Chosen of Prunilla, she makes a humble effort to ignore the claim completely, always changing the subject to matters of greater value, such as the time it takes for a pie to properly bake or the results of one of her latest earthworm competitions. Her home, a small tower sitting in the middle of the Ire Mountains where the halfling tribal elders of the Spirit Dunes meet, always has the doors wide open for anyone desiring to speak with her. Meadow's knowledge of herbs, healing, family counsel, or her large vault of gossip, makes it an almost mandatory stop for any halfling that seeks to see it all in the world.

Elections and Organizations
As the church is without any formal hierarchy or structure, there are no elections or organizations.

Temples

Bericht door hellspawn » 11-02-2011 21:24

"Spread my seeds throughout the lands. Just make sure you don't throw
them at a giant."

The faithful of Prunilla is not known to make huge temples to Lady Comfort. She firmly believes her temple is kept in every field, smelled in every pie, and felt in the beating heart of a newborn child. As such, small shrines are seen in places where her clergy gathers to gossip or for celebrations of any kind.
These small yet beautiful shrines are often made into gardens where many flowers are grown and kept with great attention to detail, always sending hidden messages through what sort of plants are chosen for them or even keeping small fruit plants. Many clinics around the world also have small shrines to Prunilla to bless the newborn and pray for the ill.

Mask Gardens
The only real structured temple of Prunilla is found as a side building to Castle Mask in the southern plains of Dregar. Starting as a supply center for all the troops stationed in the surrounding area, the local castle militia kept complaining of the horrible quality of their foods and the even worse conditions their barracks were kept in. At that time, the local halflings simply had a small warehouse and a dispatch stand for all the farmers to drop off deliveries and a tiny clinic to tend to the long-term injured soldiers.

One of the many dreary mornings, after a brief skirmish with Blood's troops, the normal castle cook was injured by a stray arrow and couldn't perform his duties, so one of the halflings offered to make something quick for them at no charge. By the time the captains had repeated their fourth serving, they knew they had found a solution to their problems. From that day forward, funds began to be reserved for a full-fledged temple to be established and eventually a group of Lucky Clovers led by Peace Vaeran brought life back to the blood-soaked soils.

The Mask Gardens were born and since then, the soldiers take care of their halflings as they so warmly have come to call them. The temple now has a well-supplied clinic where all the soldiers (and their families) are treated with the gentle hand of caring healers, and the entire garrison in the castle and nearby areas are fed by the hands of followers of Lady Comfort.

The Kaima Caves
Deep within the Ire Mountains, within the valley where the Tribal Elders of the Spirit Dunes meet to council, sits a small cave that is easily missed by the uncaring eye. Within this cave, however, lies many of the secrets of the race and their close relationship to the lands that surround them. Blossoming within this cave are hundreds of plants (including herbs, flowers, fungi, and weeds) that were thought to be lost to time or changes in the weather. Many of these plants are known to be unique reagents for many alchemical concoctions of varying degrees of use, ingredients for famous teas with rare effects, and aphrodisiacs of all kinds to both mesmerize someone or instill euphoria in those who are not careful. Yet as unique as all the plants may be, the most peculiar feature in this cave is a small statue of Prunilla that lies deep within the green-lit halls.

This small, lifelike statue seems to have been carved out of the stone itself, surrounded by the most beautiful of gardens. Many claim that when one is not looking at it, the statue gazes from the corner of its eyes to anyone that might be visiting.

The purpose behind this statue or the cave itself is not really known, but the halflings of the desert and the mountains cherish this place as sacred and protect it fiercely against anyone who may try and claim its precious content.

Prayers & Holy Days

Bericht door hellspawn » 11-02-2011 21:25

Prayers
"Oh Prunilla! Lady of the Endless Barley Fields! Behold this tragedy! We have run out of sugar!"

The followers of Prunilla are not truly fond of idolatrous prayer. They don't really consider Prunilla to be a stuck-up goddess in need of knee-scraping devotion; there is enough back bending when working the fields as it is. Thus, for the most part, prayers to Prunilla are made into small, little, gossipy lines of dialogue that show devotion in a light-hearted manner fitting to the halfling race.

Prayer said before combat: "Pruni, make these warriors proud and fierce, feed them the best courage, and let them digest stoutness. The quicker we get back to cooking, the sooner we get to enjoy the pies."

Prayer said when cooking: "Oh Dear Prunilla, with much love I have followed this recipe and have added my own touch, just as you like it. If by any chance this ends up being a disaster, I will lovingly blame you so that I'm not the target of projectile food."

Prayer said when healing: "Lady Comfort! Clearly we all enjoy a good puzzle, but let's not try it on a living creature. Please!"

Prayer said when welcoming a new life to the world: "Lady Comfort, ease this new life's passage into the world and tempt them with fresh bread and warm hands so that they will grow strong and healthy in your embrace. Let the first thing their eyes see be the smiling faces tending them in love, and please, please help those find a better name for the poor child than Sourdough."

Holy Days
"What are we serving today? Everything."

•Planting Day
Celebrated on 15th Mar (or 15th Seplar in the southern hemisphere), this is the day when most farmers begin to plant seeds for the new season to come. Starting this day without saying a small prayer or paying some sort of tribute to Prunilla, is considered by farmers worldwide as the worst possible idea ever, and the more it is given to her, the more bountiful Harvest Day will be. For those of the faith, Planting Day is a day for new beginnings. Often, many Lucky Clovers spend the day in loud contemplation of all the things they have done in the past year, easily spending the whole day talking aloud to Prunilla about all that they need to get done in the new season. At the eve of Planting Day, many clans gather around fires and conflicts are settled and a blank slate is offered for the new season. The halfling spirit clearly not one to want to carry grudges for too long.

•Midsummer Festival
Starting on 21st Junar, the Midsummer Festival begins a weeklong celebration that seems to instill the world with a sparkling spirit of youth. Halflings in the northern hempisphere gather in central hubs to simply have as much fun as possible. Those in the south celebrate this on 21st Decilar. Normally, organized in conjunction with the Church of Deliar, Lucky Clovers take it upon themselves to create the most delicious of recipes, and like a dream for anyone with taste buds, they offer these in great quantities for many to enjoy. Midsummer Festival is littered with many forms of entertainment, ranging from simple juggling acts by the corner peddler to elaborate theatrical plays performed by famous artist bands. Parents proudly announce their new babies to the community, and many couples choose this week to marry, often celebrating their union with complete strangers, yet loving every minute of it. In Port Hempstead, where it is rumored the festival began, it is also a time when nominations for the city council are made, leading to the eventual elections at the end of the month. Lucky Clovers don't bother much with politics, however, and instead they take the time to gossip to their heart's content until the early hours of the morning. Eventually, Midsummer Festival ends with a song performed by a renowned bard, a lot of happy hangovers, and extra cleaning work for the Saplings.

•Harvest Day
If prayer to Lady of the Harvest is recommended for Planting Day, anyone not doing so on 15th Seplar (or 15th Mar in the southern hemisphere) is asking for the gout. On Harvest Day, farmers around the world reap what they sow. Collecting all the fresh fruits or tilling the fields now packed with grains of all kinds, Lady of the Harvest rewards those who have tended to her fields with care and love and, to those who dare mistreat their families, she leaves a good dose of worms in the most inconvenient of places. After the long day of work and hopefully many happy returns, it is customary for those who have worked the fields to be rewarded with their favorite meals either in town halls or in the comfort of their own homes. Followers of Prunilla also often lavish their significant others with pleasant dinners under the stars and rekindle their unions before the deified couple.
