Lucinda

Bericht door hellspawn » 14-02-2011 12:39

•Aliases: Goddess of Al'Noth, Lady of Spells, Star's Mage
•Race: Human
•Worshippers: Mostly humans, half elves, and elves; fewer worshippers among other races.
•Governs: Magic, Sorcery, Spellcraft
•Mantras: Cerebral, Idealistic, Scholarly, Urban

The Al'Noth is your blood. The Al'Noth is your breath. Learn all you can of it, learn to use it wisely, and bring no harm to the Al'Noth as you would not harm yourself. Those who break the links of the Al'Noth to the lands of the world and those who seek to make unstable links to draw power are enemies of Lucinda.

Clergy Attire

Bericht door hellspawn » 14-02-2011 12:39

Clerics of Lucinda wear enchanted robes in some combination of white, blue, and black. Most mages and clerics of the Lady of Spells also wear a simple chain of silver links either as a necklace, bracelet, or belt to signify their connection to her. Lucinda favors strongly enchanted weapons over normal ones. Clerics of Lucinda usually carry staves and wands containing useful magic for everyday use and the heavier quarterstaff for defense. Because of the friendship between Lucinda and Ilsare, some followers will learn to use bows as well.

Hierarchy

Bericht door hellspawn » 14-02-2011 12:40

For millennia, the Illumination of Lucinda was a layered, complex system; a labyrinth of mages, clerics, administrators, and instructors. It was held together by worship of the Lady of Spells and the scarcity of magic. However, after the fall of Bloodstone, the darkening of the skies and the calling home of Allurial, the last Peractio, the Illumination underwent a massive transformation. To bring more magic to the struggling world and to ease fears about mages harbored by frightened minds and those who would be swayed by the words of the Deep Lord, the Illumination has reorganized into a simpler, stronger presence. Many of those who led in the past have willingly given up their seats of power for the sake of Lucinda and the Al’Noth; titles of old have been rejected in favor of less pontific nomenclature or no title at all.
First and foremost in the new church, there are now three schools for those who would learn the arcane arts or practice spellpraying to the Lady of Spells. Those who are just beginning their journey into the mysteries of the arcane, regardless of race, age, or status, attend schools of the Presage (also called Links of Lucinda). Students attending one of these schools are usually called Links. The schools are open to all, and older students who have moved to the Chain, even those who are in the Reaching, often attend and mix with the Links. The Octlar Mesh chooses a person every five years, called the Docet, to head each Presage.

Second in the schools is the Thaumaturge (also called the Chain). This is both the home of the libraries and lore collections and the place where the Links go to begin learning the process of spell creation; not merely the route casting of preexisting spells as the Presage teaches. This can be a life’s work or a month’s study, depending on the skill and desires of the student and the decisions of the Reaching. The leader of the Thaumaturge is called the Scrollregent, and there is one at each location that there is a Presage. However, not every location can support a separate building dedicated to libraries. On Dregar, Belinara, and Tilmar, the Scrollregent works inside the Presage. Scrollregents are chosen every ten years by the Octlar Mesh.

Third, is the Reaching. Here are those who are a product of the past, extremely wise in the ways of magic, or who have been both a Link and part of the Chain; they teach beyond the use of magic. In these buildings, are the whys and when-not-to’s of magic. The wisdom of lifetimes measured in decades and centuries are gathered and passed on here. There is one person in charge of the Reaching, located in Spellgard, and she takes no title but goes by her birth name. Demisa Shimrastri was the first voted into the office and has remained the only person who truly heads the Reaching. While she is not a cleric, she will be the first to say she has 400 years of experience making mistakes and learning from them and that should count for something.

The Peractio, when there is one, has traditionally made decisions and directed the church unilaterally. Recent changes now give the Octlar Mesh the power to overturn a ruling by a Peractio if the vote is unanimous. The Octlar Mesh—the meeting of the five Docets, the five Scrollregents, the three Fosters, and the head of the Reaching—convenes every Octlar but can be called as needed. While the leader of the Reaching has a strong sway over opinions, each of the 14 in the Mesh have an equal vote. Many decisions that can be put to a larger vote are dealt with at the Star’s Mage Vinculum when all who worship the Star’s Mage converge.

•The Octlar Mesh on Octlar 21
Gathering at the Catena Campus once per year, the Octlar Mesh is both a mixing of ideas and the time when votes are taken on promotions and new responsibilities for Illumination members. The Campus is closed for this week and protections are at their highest for the year.

Among the other changes that have either revitalized or destroyed the church, depending on who you ask, is the translation of many texts into Common. Formerly, most of the works in the Chain libraries were in elven or the speech of dragons. However, few potential mages have the ability to both eek out a living and also spend the time required to learn such difficult languages. As such, to demystify basic magic, almost all of the known weaker incantations, protections, and illusions have been compiled into books that are taught in the universal language of Layonara. Those who wish to learn a few useful spells can now do so without spending a lifetime translating.

Elections and Organization

Lucinda teaches three things in equal measure, all being important to her and none taking importance over the other: to love magic, to love the discovery of the unknown, and to gain wisdom through the experience of arcane power. Each of the three schools that teaches in her name embodies one of these lessons.

Presage (Links of Lucinda)
Magic is. Love it. Do not fear what you do not understand. Come to the arms of Lucinda’s faithful and learn to use your power. Embrace the Al’Noth as a gift that no one else can give you. Use it for yourself or others. Lucinda does not judge as long as it is done with passion and with respect to the Al’Noth.
This is the message of the Presage, where those with the ability may learn to control innate magic or to cast spells. Here is taught all the basics of tapping into and protecting the Al’Noth. Here too, with practice, one can learn more subtle forms of the art. No distinction is made between the power of Lucinda’s divine magic and the Al’Noth, and both clerics and mages may learn here side by side. Four continents and one island have temples and shrines that include a Presage. The largest is located on the Catena Campus in Spellgard. The halls are open to anyone. There are guides to help new students and there are safe rooms to practice spells in. Anyone who wishes to be consecrated by Lucinda’s clerics may do so here at no cost.
The Spellgard Presage is the premier school, teaching over a thousand students now and much expanded from its previous size. In charge of this school is Docet Ricketbarker, a middleaged halfling who was instrumental in both changes in the church structure and formation of Love and Magic, the Lucinda and Ilsare sect.

Docet Ricketbarker – This cheerful, red-haired halfling is a combination of charm and power who most find irresistible. A spellweaver whose power in the arcane is matched by his thrillingly deep basso and rib-tickling lyrics, he often sings his lessons to his classes to keep their attention as much as aid their learning.

Thaumaturge (Chain)
For every lesson learned, there are ten lost to time. For every spell created, there are a hundred waiting to be scribed. You are here to know more, to delve, to uncover, to create. You are here to read what has come before you so you might test the limits of your understanding. You are here to travel the world and add to the knowledge of the Al’Noth. You are here to share that knowledge in the name of the Star’s Mage. And you are here to find out what puts the sparkle in our Lady’s eyes; the discovery of magic and magic through discovery. The Thaumaturge is the second stage of learning, often called the Chain because it is where the Links begin to combine their knowledge and build new spells. The libraries and other collections of knowledge reside here, allowing a Link to begin researching on his or her own. Overseen by a Scrollregent, there are thick stone buildings slathered in magical protections and dedicated to the collection of arcane knowledge on Mistone, in Spellgard, and on Alindor at Castle Imjam. Smaller libraries exist within Presage buildings on Dregar, Belinara, and Tilmar. Students can spend any amount of time here. Rarely will a student speed through spell development and be able to manipulate the Al’Noth in months. Usually it is a matter of years and a lifetime for some. The current Scrollregent of the Spellgard Thaumaturge, Umbek Haggerstan, has spent twenty years of his life delighting in the discovery of new spells and powers, and he espouses no desire to join the ranks of the Reaching.

Scrollregent Umbek Haggerstan – In his 40’s, this rotund, dandified mage has spent two-thirds of his life creating spells. Born the son of a rat catcher, he never thought he’d be able to read a word until his innate abilities with the Al’Noth drove him from the filthy streets of Fort Vehl, rocks at his back. He hitched a ride on a caravan to Spellgard and volunteered to catch rats at the temple of Lucinda while reconstruction was going on, and he never looked back.

He caught the eye of the Docet when he was found to be using several unique combinations of fire and ice magic to destroy rodents and make them easier to clean up. His time in the Presage was only as long as it took to learn his letters. His rise to Scrollregent was meteoric. Since then, he has learned to further manipulate the Al’Noth, adding illusions to augment his more element-based powers, has discovered (and pursued every single nuance of) fine cooking, and has become fond of huge, billowy, almost bizarre sleeves on his midnight-blue tunics.

Reaching
All the power in the world will slip through mad fingers without wisdom. Magic is power; it grants the ability to command one’s surroundings and make what you will of them. Yet, Lucinda teaches that to misuse arcane power is to fail in the love and understanding of magic. To draw too strongly on the Al’Noth and to break links of energy and strip the very air of magic are abuses. To be in the Reaching is to know both how to break the Al’Noth and why one should not. Those who cast arcane spells are often happy in the Chain, researching and learning. But to those who have learned either through hard experience or cautious nature the dangers of the Al’Noth, the Reaching is home. The lessons here revolve around all the ways the Al’Noth can be damaged, all the ways magical flow can be hampered, and how to remedy those situations; the ethics of magical use. Beyond that, the Reaching teaches that these things that damage the Al’Noth should not be done. Most of the members have the experience to avoid the most evil uses of magic as well as those practices that damage the source. It is this group that watches for those who would damage the Al’Noth and brings them to Illumination justice.

Members of the Reaching are some of the most powerful spellweavers on Layonara. A good many draw on both divine and arcane power, and they tend toward older individuals with more time spent in the practice of their art. Add to that the emphasis on wisdom rather than raw power, and they make remarkable foes to those who cross them and powerful allies to those who earn their respect. The elected leader of the Reaching is Demisa Shimrastri, an elven woman from Voltrex.

"Let me tell you a story of a simple, pretty elven girl. Intended to follow Aeridin by her staunchly anti-human parents, she instead found herself hanging out with the local nutty wizard. Every spell she learned whetted her appetite for more—every invocation, every glamour, every augury. Her powers increased daily, and over time she became very fond of her magic. Very, very fond. So fond that she began to take her gifts for granted. She began to demand rather than ask and used her abilities to ensure she got what she wanted.
For years, her beauty gave her leeway with her power backing it up. Until she made demands of the wrong person, underestimating his power and her own abilities in the raw arrogance of her youth. She coveted spells this quiet, dark-eyed mage could cast; powers that let one see into the mind of others, even plant suggestions there. She asked, then pleaded, then commanded the man to teach her. And teach her he did; although, it was not a spell but a lesson. For after she attempted the first incantation he gave her, she found herself unable to speak.

Days turned into weeks and her voice did not return. No spells! No magic! No power of the Al’Noth flowing from her fingertips at her command! She pouted, she flung things, and she curled into a fetal position and cried. After a year, the young woman began to accept. She looked around her empty house and realized her last century of spoiled indulgence driven by her powers in magic had left her alone. There was no one to cry to.

Oh, she had all that she could want—beautiful things, books to fill a library, and scroll after scroll of spells that she could no longer cast. She walked twice through her home, thoughtful, picking up those things she had scattered in her earlier rage. And then she went out, for the first time looking at the world around her, and gave away many of those lovely things. Just gave them away. She spent some time helping families displaced by a band of madmen, and before she’d counted, another year had gone by.

She had let go of her magic by now. She was content though, for perhaps the first time in her life. She had friends. She had things to do that did not revolve around her. It was by chance that she was on the street the day a herd of mad boar charged down the road. On reflex she cast the first spell that came to mind, not one of the most powerful that she had bent and broken rules to get, but a simple one that had stood her well before the lust for power took her. And that spell worked. Her voice came, not clear and loud as it would in a novel, but rusty, cracked, painful; but speak she did. From that day, her speech remained with her.

That girl, that young woman, that middle-aged elf stands before you now to remind you that there are consequences for your actions. Be wary of those who live to extremes, be wary of those who would hurt you, be wary of many things; but most of all, you who bathe in the power of the Al’Noth, be wary of yourselves."
-Demisa Shimrastri

Golden brown eyes, hair the color of rich old oak, a soft high tenor with a velvet purr, Demisa is a lovely example of the elven race. She has led the Reaching since it was founded, an eyeblink to this 430-year-old elf. She tells one story at the weekly Reaching Council. In ten years, she has not repeated herself.

TenebriumHoused in Spellgard, this series of vaults are the single most magically protected structures on Layonara. Here rests the Scroll of Al’Noth, the Rebus Runea, spells deemed destructive enough to unbalance the world, and rumors speak of spells that mimic the effects of Bloodpools gathering dust in the rooms as well. The vaults are located deep under the Catena Campus, and it is said that no one mage could in a lifetime dismantle the layers of spells protecting it. In fact, it would take an army of spellweavers with both arcane and divine spells and the powers of a rogue as well, which is appropriate because that is what put the protections in place to begin with.
The Tenebrium is headed by a group of three mages called Fosters, all of whom are required simultaneously to open any door, and none of which are heads of the Presages, Thaumaturge, or Reaching.

PeractioAt the head of the church for decades was the Peractio, Lucinda’s chosen representative. There have been five over the history of the church: two elves, a halfling, and two humans. The last Peractio was Allurial, the Queen of Mistone. She was the closest link to Lucinda who walked as a living, breathing being. She was the perfect combination of power being both a mage and a cleric. Decisions of the church, then in its more complex incarnation, were approved by her in the time of Bloodstone walking the world. After his defeat, Lucinda called her final chosen link home. Since then, no one has stepped forward who can legitimately lay claim to the title.

Sects

Bericht door hellspawn » 14-02-2011 12:41

While the three schools cover just about everything a mage or cleric could want or need in the ways of learning magic, there are some people who choose to dive deeper into a specific area of the Al'Noth. Not all of them are welcome in the body of the Illumination. In addition to the sects, the Illumination of Lucinda has close ties to Mistone Academy of Innovation as new ways to combine technology and magic are discovered; however, relations with Goran are strained at the moment.

Pit Stalkers
Pit Stalkers study the Pits, the Thread, and all the phenomena in between. This is a very small group associated with the Thaumaturge, and they are almost always adventuring types. Some would say a measure of insanity is also required, and although the rewards in terms of spells and power are great, the mortality rate of a Pit Stalker is roughly ten times that of a normal adventurer. They are currently based in the Castle Imjam Thaumaturge and are led by Racie Shelly and Jimman Ebbers.
Racie Shelly is a hardened woman of 50 who has spent 20 years going places that even the insane don't dream about on their worst nights. She has watched over fourty of her friends and fellow Pit Stalkers die, and she shows very little emotion anymore. Her powers in the Al’Noth tend toward subtle glamours that allow her to move unseen and blend when she must be seen; she specializes in this kind of magic. She wears her steely gray hair short and does not adorn herself at all. She is widowed and has no children.

Jimman Ebbers is young and cocky, wild at heart and confident to extremes. He swaggers like a mercenary, albeit a skinny one. His magic is of the flash-and-bang style; large booms that leave charred meat in their wake. He’s survived the Pit Stalkers for five years however, a long span by their measuring, and he has enough common sense that Racie puts up with him. He wears his dark brown hair long and his blue eyes will actually spark when he's on the trail of a unique stream of the Al’Noth for reasons he keeps to himself. He is unmarried.

Dragonlinks

Dragonlinks are associated with the Thaumaturge in Spellgard and are the world's second most sought after experts on dragon lore. While the Church of Aragen holds most of the limited knowledge regarding the great beasts that once ruled the skies of Layonara, they defer in matters of the arcane and here the Dragonlinks pick up the slack.

The largest written collection of spells known to be used by dragons exist here along with those few who understand the peculiarities of dragon magic enough to interpret and modify them. While a few of those who join spend their time attempting to translate and adapt the spells to be used by non-dragons, more go out in search of additional information from ruins, books or artifacts; very few, though, take the more dangerous route of seeking the source.

The head of this group is Rork O'Mallory who was part of negotiations with Black Plague and several other dragons around Layonara during the Dark Ages. He is also thought to have been one of the Dragon Called before Ozlo's death. He chooses no title for himself and goes simply by Rork.

Rork O'Mallory is a tall, well-built man in his 50's, tanned, and looking more like a forest ranger than the cleric of Lucinda he is. His blond hair is only starting to gray and his pale green eyes sparkle when he talks about his adventures. He’s said to have a friend among the dragons; although, he will not confirm this (nor will he deny it). But his respectable command of draconic and his knowledge of the subtleties of the dragon culture are unmatched in the Illumination. Rork is married with four young daughters.

Risen
While generally accepted by Lucinda's church, the Risen are sometimes seen as being on the outer fringes of the faith due to their focus on the "darker" aspects of magic. No one will deny their benefit, as this group focuses on spells that raise living shells from the grave and those magics that call souls free from the mortal coil back to the land of the living, as well as those magics which protect against life-stealing spells.

Understandably, the spellweavers and spellprayers that perform this research and the associated rituals are a practical sort, often harshly so. Even so, their activities are conducted with a respect for the living and dead alike, and they go so far as to communicate with the souls before hand, with bodies often being left upon death by devout followers for such use to further the knowledge of this rather specialized form of magic.

The Thaumaturge at Castle Imjam is known to assist them and the Pit Stalkers sometimes confer when their specialties cross. No single member claims to lead. When representation is necessary, the group chooses someone to speak for them based on who is available and one's specialty, if applicable.

Some among the Risen have wished to push beyond the self-imposed limits of the group, seeing no reason why they should limit themselves in Magic. Over time, another group has splintered from the Risen, though has since recruited members from outside the faith, has come a group that freely borrow the prestige of the Risen but shows none of the respect for the dead that the true Risen do.

This group, which admits no official name, is devoted to the art of binding souls to do one's bidding and to conducting research into extracting knowledge from the spirits of the dead as well as animating remains. They have no qualms about who or what, and they feel no moral obligation to obtain permission; what is dead is theirs to play with.

The Risen, and now by extension the Church of Lucinda, have started calling them the Mortis, believing them to be akin to Corathites in their methods. There are no known clerics of Lucinda among the members whose names are known, and this fuels the idea that the Lady herself has turned her back on them.

Given this the members of the Mortis have been declared outlaws by the rest of the church, and the group as a whole has caused a great deal of trouble for the legitimate Risen, both within the ranks of the church and in the perceptions of those outside as well.

Rumors have circulated, based on information from captured Mortis members, that there is research planned for tapping the power of souls that have not found the shelter of a god, but the degree of success of this effort and whether this is on-going is not known.

Love and Magic
Lucinda and Ilsare, friends in the heavens and both with a depth of passion for what they do, mirrors the other. This new gathering celebrates both faiths, freely mixing spellsinging, spellweaving, and archery in a potent mix. Begun by an Ilsarian sect called the Heartsong Archers, one of the founding members is Docet Ricketbarker who came to his faith in Lucinda through that group. He uses his position as head of the Spellgard Presage to spread the word when he can. With his visibility, the sect has gained acceptance and members.

The Love and Magic sect follows the tenets of both Ilsare and Lucinda and trains to protect either as well as to spread the word and delve into aspects of the Al'Noth that a straight Lucindite would not be able to tap. They are headquartered on Tilmar at the moment, studying the art, music, dance, writings, and magic of the island; though, they are not bound to any one location and will pack up and leave if the whim strikes them.

Research into mixing spellsinging with the Al'Noth is ongoing in this sect. One of these new discoveries is chromajury, the act of painting with the Al'Noth on specially blessed canvases. Discovered by influential member Misty Guanistas, the paintings are both vivid and mesmerizing. Three are working on extending the lifespan of a chromajury spell, using what is known of the Scroll of Al’Noth magic as a base.

Misty Guanistas has the glossy black hair, dark eyes, and teak skin of a southerner. Born in Lor on Dregar, she’s been both a mage and a street painter. When she found Love and Magic, she felt as if the goddesses had read her heart and now researches and tries new ways to combine her twin loves in life. She is unmarried but keeps a number of male friends for company.

Temples

Bericht door hellspawn » 14-02-2011 12:41

Given the number of things a building to Lucinda must do—house teachers, students, books, scrolls, provide learning and practicing rooms capable of withstanding many accidentally discharged spells, as well as an infirmary—the temples tend toward the large side. Those with the room for a Presage and a Thaumaturge are larger still, and the Catena Campus in Spellgard is the largest yet.
The buildings are always built of stone and marble with as little wood as possible. Windows are used only in lecture rooms and auditoriums.

The Presages on Mistone are located on the Catena Campus in Spellgard and the Temple of the Peractio at Blackford Castle. The Presages on Alindor are located in Katherian and at Castle Imjam. There is a small Presage in the Kingdom of Sun, but it is limited to humans only. The Presage on Dregar is in North Point. The Presage on Belinara is in Arnax. The Presage on Tilmar is in Huangjin. The Thaumaturges on Mistone are at the Catena Campus and Blackford Castle. The Thaumaturge on Alindor is located at Castle Imjam. The Reaching is at the Catena Campus in Spellgard, and the Tenebrium is located below the Campus.

Prayers & Holy Days

Bericht door hellspawn » 14-02-2011 12:42

Prayers
Prayers to the Star’s Mage are done at night when the constellation Lucinda’s Necklace is visible in the sky.

"Lady of Spells, fountain of discovery.
In faith, in love, in magic, we seek the endless chain.
Forming bonds with past and future,
with the lost and the found.
In eternal search for knowledge unbound.

Mage of the heavens, guide our search.
First link of blessed birth.
Home of our hearts, guide our thirst.
Be our anchor, our berth.

And in your endless wonder.
In your twinkling eye.
Make this seeker of the unknown,
One of your pride, your smile."
-Piper, halfling wizard of Lucinda

"My Lady,
I come before you, a humble servant.
Grateful for the gifts you bestow on me.

I seek only to glorify you.
To demonstrate the truth of your power.
Let my every breath and every beat of my heart speak your name.

I pray that you use me to link others to the faith.
Together we are strong.
But only with your guidance."
-Galen Tweed of the Spellgard Tweeds, cleric and mage of Lucinda

Holy Days

•Presage Confab on Apreal 10 and Septlar 10
Biannually the Presages meet, rotating around the different schools (with the exception of the Sun Kingdom Presage for obvious reasons). While this is not a holy day, it is often treated as one. Each Presage Confab lasts three days.

•Gathering of the Scrolls on Mai 18
Alternating yearly between Spellgard and Castle Imjam, Thaumaturge leaders meet for one week to discuss issues, suggestions, spells, and most of all, to compare arcane research at their schools. As with the Presage Confab, this is treated as a solemn and important occasion by the hosting campus.

•The Star’s Mage Vinculum on Decilar 1
Meeting at the Temple of the Peractio in the cold month of Decilar, every confirmed member of the Illumination is welcomed for a gathering of, well, everyone. Tents spill out around Blackford Castle, which has special stores of food and drink for this event and throws dinner after dinner in the grand dining hall. Thousands attend and the atmosphere is festive despite the cold. Every evening a special presentation of spells is displayed for the crowds and prayers are led to Lucinda that result in what one attendee likened to "...the most powerful feeling of our Lady standing with us that I’ve ever felt. Everyone, everyone was nearly in tears. Some did cry. The Al’Noth was so thick you could breathe it." Presentations, speeches, prayers, votes, and dedications are all made from a plain podium located directly in front of the last spot Allurial stood before Lucinda opened up the skies to the sun and sent her representative to collect the Queen. That spot is always buried in blue and white flowers during the Vinculum.

•The Feast of Al’Noth on Febra 15
During the deepest harsh of winter, it has become tradition since 1413 to open the doors of the Presages and bring in folks from the cities and surrounding country for a grand feast. Glamours and displays of fancy and illusion are mixed in with dinner in this "Feast of Knowledge." The brainstorm of a Thaumaturge named Kely Daean, the purpose is to further ties to the communities the schools are in and bring joy to the grayest month of the year. Children especially look forward to the Feast of Al’Noth and are often the driving force that brings the parents in to join.

•Ordination of the Thaumaturge on Mai 30 and Seplar 30
Twice a year those who have joined the Thaumaturge go through a ceremony. While the confirmation of a Presage is now a streamlined, less cumbersome process, those who decide to devote the full of their time to the study of the Al’Noth are given a ceremonious welcome. Official welcoming by the heads of the Thaumaturges, a meeting of one’s fellows, and feasting are the features of an Ordination.

•Inaugural of the Reaching on Decilar 30
Joining the Reaching is a momentous event in one’s life. The Reaching, while they do not hold themselves above the other schools, are representative of the highest power one can attain in the Illumination and are often both clerics and mages, further stretching their understanding and their power in the Al’Noth. The Inaugural is dignified, taking a full, slow day to complete; all in the Reaching join.
